This year, workers have been pushed to the brink. The Passover story can help be a guide for us during these times. It, too, tells us about workers who were pushed beyond the limits of what they could endure. These Jewish slaves broke the chains of oppression and fought together for liberation and freedom.

The New England Jewish Labor Committee’s Labor Seder is a unique interfaith event where Jewish community leaders, labor leaders, elected officials, and community activists build bridges that enable us all to pursue justice with greater strength and resolve.

At the Labor Seder, we connect the Passover story with struggles for workplace justice today. The Labor Seder highlights issues we face in Massachusetts and the efforts being made to address them. It inspires participants to act to bring the voice of the Jewish community to bear in support of workplace equity.

This year we will be honoring Merrie Najimy, President of the Massachusetts Teachers Association, for her long standing dedication and service to teachers across Massachusetts. In particular, we feel it is crucial that we honor her for her work to keep teachers, students and communities safe during the course of this pandemic. She has been a critical voice in Massachusetts as we fight for a just recovery.

We also will honor Jerry Rubin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Jewish Vocational Service, for his tireless efforts to protect workers during the COVID-19 crisis, his vision he has created of developing the workforce, JVS’s dedication to the economic well-being of immigrants, and the creative responses to COVID that JVS has implemented.

We will also be recognizing workers who have won their fights for collective bargaining – more details to come on just which workers we will honor.
